I am in no slightest doubt that an immediate and probably fatal relapse would be the consequence of any attempt on my part, in my greatly debilitated state, to encounter at so early a period the destructive effects of Hongkong. Under these circumstances, I venture to ask your Grace for an extension of my leave for the period of six months from the first day of April next, at which date my subsisting leave will expire.

I have the honour to forward herewith Certificate from the Acting Governor Macgowan (or possibly MacDonnell, but most likely to be Macgowan as per context), together with Medical Certificates, and remain,

Your Grace's most Obedient Humble Servant,

M. H. Adams, Chief Justice &c. Hongkong.

To His Grace the Duke of Newcastle, K.C.M.G. (or possibly another title), Secretary of State for the Colonies.

13 February 1864.

Sir,

With reference to your Communication dated the 29th ultimo, I take the liberty of inquiry whether the stoppage of my Salary is to commence on and from the 1st day of April next, or whether the Payment of the Half Salary will be continued until the completion of one-half the period of my resident service in the Colony of Hong Kong plus the further period of six months.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your Most Obedient Humble Servant,

M. H. Adams, Chief Justice & Hongkong.

To Sir Frederic Rogers, Bart.
